The different species of ticks are grouped into three large families commonly known as hard ticks, soft ticks and a third, intermediate family. In Québec, 12 tick species have been identified so far and all belong to the family of hard ticks.

Ixodes cookei is the leading vector of Powassan virus (the agent responsible for Powassan encephalitis). Although the groundhog tick has been endemic to Québec for many years, only 5 cases of Powassan encephalitis were reported between 2004 and 2014.

The Dermacentor variabilis tick is a vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent responsible for Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) and Francisella tularensis, the agent responsible for tularemia.

The Amblyomma americanum tick is known for its ability to transmit the bacteria Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent responsible for human monocytic ehrlichiosis, Ehrlichia ewingii, the agent responsible for human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, and Francisella tularensis, the agent responsible for turalemia.

The Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick can transmit the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent responsible for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The Haemaphysalis leporispalustris tick is known to be a reservoir of Francisella tularensis, the agent responsible for tularemia. However, it is not a vector of transmission of this disease to humans.
