In the early 1990s the indicator disability-adjusted life years (DALY) was developed in response to a need for data used in health decision-making on an international scale. Since then, a number of countries have used this indicator to produce territorial estimates.

As part of a wide-ranging project to study the health status of Québec's Anglophones, the present analysis examines the Anglophone population's socioeconomic situation over time, by geographic area, and in comparison with Francophones. The variable used to establish membership in the Anglophone population is the mother tongue. The study analyzes standard socioeconomic indicators, as well as income disparity.

Healthy public policy is by nature intersectoral because those in the health sector are seeking to affect policy in other sectors. Intersectoral work is required, in particular, to address the determinants of health and to reduce health inequalities. There is a growing body of study on multi-sectoral approaches, or integrated governance approaches, as we have named them. Divider curtains are often used in health care settings to surround patient’s bed and provide privacy. Many factors contribute to the concern that these curtains are a potential source for the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms: 1) caregivers and patients touch curtains frequently; 2) in some settings, curtains are not often cleaned or changed; 3) health care workers and patients who handle curtains do not necessarily cleanse their hands before (or after) touching them.

The National Collaborating Centre for Healthy Public Policy (NCCHPP) seeks to support the efforts of the Canadian public health community and its partners in promoting healthy public policy through more informed strategies. Among other things, the Centre focuses on Health Impact Assessment (HIA), a tool that helps shed light on decision making related to the development of policies, programs or projects that could have effects on the population’s overall health.

During the winter of 2005, some 175 citizens and close to twenty experts participated in a wideranging dialogue aimed at generating ideas in support of a healthy Québec. These deliberations, organized by the Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM), brought to light the desire among citizens for the creation of a Bureau d'audiences publiques en santé (BAPS).

This 2007 exploratory study was conducted to examine the contribution of political science departments to the study of health policy in Canada. The first phase of our project consisted of a systematic scan of political science departments at universities across Canada to identify currently offered courses that are principally or partially focused on health and identify the political science researchers who have studied health.
