Basics of child development

Your child needs you in order to grow and develop. Your caring words and actions are essential.

Children grow and develop step by step. All children go through the same stages, but each at their own pace. Your child’s development can be observed in several areas:

  • Motor: your child’s body movements, including the hands and fingers
  • Cognitive: the ways they understand the world around them
  • Socio-emotional: their emotions and relationships with others
  • Language: the ways they communicate and their language.

As your child develops, so do their abilities. During the first two years of life, your child will learn with you to talk and to regulate their emotions a little. They will learn to get around, first by crawling, and eventually by walking. There will be a lot of change in just two years!

To grow and develop, your child needs simple yet essential things. They need to eat, sleep, stay clean and dry, and be safe. They also need loving contact with the people who take care of them. The relationship you have with your child depends on many factors, including your personality and your child’s temperament.
