Nosebleeds - what to do

If your child has a nosebleed, have them sit down and lean their head forward slightly, pinch their nostrils, and maintain pressure for about 10 minutes.

Bleeding can occur when the nose is irritated after a cold or when a child has put a finger or object in a nostril. Nosebleeds are generally harmless.

If your child is bleeding from the nose, follow these steps:

  • Reassure them.
  • Have them sit down and lean their head forward slightly.
  • Make sure they are breathing through the mouth.
  • If your child is able to blow their nose (rare in children under 2), have them blow it into a tissue to clear out any blood clots.
  • Pinch their nostrils, just below the bony part of their nose, between your thumb and index finger.
  • Maintain constant pressure for about 10 minutes; that should stop the bleeding.
  • If bleeding persists, contact Info-Santé (8-1-1) or a doctor.
