Striving for Health Equity for Indigenous populations

Thematic Day

Présentiel December 2, 2022

Simultaneous French-English translation for the entire activity (Traduction simultanée français-anglais pour l'ensemble de l'activité)

Several studies, reports and Commissions of Inquiry have identified health inequities experienced by Indigenous populations related to the social determinants of health. In addition, Indigenous persons are over-represented in the child welfare and justice systems.

To address the social determinants of health and thereby, promote health equity for First Nations, Inuit and Métis, the Chief Public Health Officer of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), in her 2019 and 2021 reports, emphasizes the continuum of cultural safety, which includes a trauma-informed approach, anti-racism, and cultural humility, with a focus on self-determination.

The thematic day will allow participants to integrate actions that promote health equity for Indigenous populations into their public health practices.

This training is intended for professionals in the public health network and physicians in public health, managers in the public health network, as well as all intersectoral partners and others interested in the subject.

By the end of the thematic day, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the determinants of health specific to Indigenous populations;
  • Explain the effects of past and current traumas, as well as the different visions of health of Indigenous populations regarding their health and wellbeing;
  • Identify public health actions that promote health equity for Indigenous populations.
