Instructions for self collection of extragenital samples performed in a clinical setting for the detection of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae
This toolkit provides instructions for the self‑collection of extragenital samples performed in clinical settings for the detection of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae. These tools are available as posters or handouts designed to guide individuals in collecting their own anorectal and pharyngeal samples. They were developed to support and harmonize practices already in place in several clinical settings across Québec.
Several commercial kits for detecting C. trachomatis (CT) and N. gonorrhoeae (NG) infections are used in Québec. Only one of these kits is currently approved by Health Canada for use with self‑collected extragenital samples (pharyngeal or rectal). Instructions provided by laboratory teams or recommended in local clinical settings vary considerably: in some settings, it is clear whether this practice is accepted or not; in other settings, no official or unofficial guidance exists.
The Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) requested the expertise of the Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ) to review current knowledge and practices related to self‑collection of extragenital samples for CT/NG detection. This review found that, with clear instructions and adequate support, most individuals who require testing for CT/NG are able to collect their own extragenital samples correctly. These practices are well accepted by most people and can improve access to testing and care, particularly among priority populations.
