    Ticks spend a part of their lifecycle on the ground and another part attached to the skin of their host, feeding on their blood.

  • Ixodes cookei, or groundhog tick

    Ixodes cookei is the leading vector of Powassan virus (the agent responsible for Powassan encephalitis). Although the groundhog tick has been endemic to Québec for many years, only 5 cases of Powassan encephalitis were reported between 2004 and 2014.
