Medical instruments and products containing
mercury (Hg) are still widely used in health care facilities.
These are mostly thermometers and sphygmomanometers. Breakage,
inadequate maintenance and disposal of such instruments can expose
workers and the public to this toxic substance. Mercury can easily
enter the body if its vapor is inhaled. If the environment is
polluted by this substance, it may also be transformed into an
organic form and contaminated fish or other foods may be ingested.
Long-term exposure to mercury can permanently damage the brain,
kidneys, and developing fetuses.
This guide has been designed for health care
facilities personnel involved in safety committees and risk management
activities. It provides information to prevent exposure to mercury
vapors, mainly by identifying safe substitutes for mercury in
medical instruments and other products. This guide also recommends
preparedness and response activities in relation with accidents
involving metallic mercury.
