Distribution of the population aged 12 to 17 years old according to the physical activity level during leisure time and by sex, Québec, 2009-2010

Updated on December 12, 2012

Sources :

Institut national de santé publique du Québec.

Statistics Canada, Canadian Community Health Survey, 2009-2010.

In 2009-2010, roughly 4 out of 10 Quebec teenagers (41%) were physically active during their leisure time, with the proportion being higher among boys (48%) than among girls (33%). In contrast, very few teenagers (6%) were sedentary during their leisure time. However, when somewhat active and barely active teenagers are included in the latter group, this proportion rises to 33%.

Methodological notes:

* Coefficient of variation higher than 15% and lower than or equal to 25%. The value must be interpreted with caution.

1. The results pertain to physical activity over a three-month period. Since data collection was spread over 24 consecutive months, each percentage represents the average for the total period. This data collection method takes into account seasonal variations.

2. For more information on the definitions and for examples, consult the text by Nolin & Hamel, 2006, (see Appendix 2, p. 13-16).
